Local Team Sarcomas

Organize a local Team Sarcoma

Be a part of the international effort to raise sarcoma awareness by forming a local Team Sarcoma in your area! A local Team Sarcoma is a group of people that have a sarcoma awareness and/or fund raising event on one or more of the days that the "core" Team Sarcoma is touring along the Danube River. Be creative and choose an event that will attract your friends and family and people in your community. Past events have included: runs, walks, cycling events, swimming events, sunset strolls, races, bowling tournaments, skateboarding events, soccer goalie camps, rummage sales, letter writing campaigns, educational talks and seminars, luminaries, recitals of opera arias, and physician consultations.

Planning can be fun!

Pick one or more days from July 12th-20th for your event. Planning the activity can be lots of fun — getting together to discuss and select various routes, making maps, hand-outs and sign-up sheets gives your community an opportunity to contribute to raising public awareness of sarcoma and to raising money for sarcoma-related research to help find a cure for this disease. Many of the Local Team Sarcomas plan a picnic lunch or bar-b-que as part of their activity and many have a celebration event a few weeks afterward. You can see the wide range of events that Teams did last year by clicking here.

Tell your friends and family

Tell your family and friends what you're doing and why. By discussing sarcoma with them, you are helping increase public awareness about sarcoma. You can learn about sarcoma by downloading our “Sarcoma Facts” information sheet. The fact sheet is available in a variety of languages (click here). More detailed information can be found on the sarcoma page on our website. Print out and give a copy of some of this material to family and friends or e-mail them copies of these pages. Some other useful sites are found on our Sarcoma Communities link page. Make posters to put up during your event. Think of creative ways to help us reach our awareness goal of raising public awareness of sarcoma. Some local Team Sarcomas have created websites to publicize their events. If you haven't already seen it, we recommend that you look at the video "A Forgotten Cancer" on YouTube. It gives some basic information about sarcoma and the Team Sarcoma Initiative. In addition to English, you can view it in any of the following languages Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Polish, and Spanish. We suggest that you recommend to your family, friends and event participants that they view this video as well.

Get the media involved

Let your local newspaper and TV news, documentary, and public service programs know about your local Team Sarcoma event and the worldwide Team Sarcoma Initiative. Share your local Team Sarcoma’s story and the “Sarcoma Facts” with them. If we can help you with this effort, please let us know. The local Team Sarcomas are part of an internationally coordinated set of events focusing on sarcoma awareness. The more local Team Sarcomas that participate, the more successful we will be in increasing public awareness of sarcoma.

Team Sarcoma T-Shirts and Bracelets

The mantra of the Team Sarcoma Initiative is "Sarcoma Knows No Borders". We use this phrase because sarcomas can occur anywhere in the body and they don't discriminate on age, gender, race or nationality. People from all over the globe participate in Team Sarcoma Events ― young, old, women, men, from countries across Europe, through Asia and Pacific regions, and in North and Central America. The Team Sarcoma bracelet has "Sarcoma Knows No Borders" printed on one side and the word "sarcoma" printed in 13 of the world's languages on the other side. The background color of the bracelet is a swirl of a pathology slide of a sarcoma patient. The Team Sarcoma T-Shirt also has "Sarcoma Knows Know Borders" emblazoned on its back and comes in a number of languages.

A "Sarcoma Knows No Borders" bracelet should be included in the registration packet of each participant in your Team Sarcoma Event. There are three options for T-Shirts:

  1. You can use our Team Sarcoma T-Shirts which are available online through Cafépress.

  2. We can also assist you in having the Team Sarcoma T-Shirts personalized for your own event through Cafépress; see, for example, see the ABC-Survivors Team Sarcoma T-Shirt. Please send Bruce Shriver a note to learn more details about this option.

  3. You can have your own Team Sarcoma T-Shirts made. The phrase "Team Sarcoma" should appear somewhere on the T-Shirt. Please also consider including the phrase "Sarcoma Knows No Borders.

Raising funds to support sarcoma research

Some event organizers and participants choose to raise funds during the Team Sarcoma Initiative. Typical recipients of the funds are sarcoma research organizations, sarcoma patient assistance funds, sarcoma medical centers, and other sarcoma related charitable organizations. Team members can contact friends, family, and colleagues to sponsor their participation in their local Team Sarcoma event to help raise money for sarcoma-related research. Even if an event is a fundraiser, participants on a local Team Sarcoma are not required to raise funds for sarcoma research to participate on the team.

The Team Sarcoma Initiative is organized by volunteers from the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative. If you would like to support the global Team Sarcoma Initiative with a donation, a sponsor form is located here. At least 97-98% of the donations made with this sponsor form will support sarcoma research and sarcoma families through the Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative.

Official Team Sarcoma Events

To be sanctioned as an official Team Sarcoma event, you need to register your event with us. It's a very simple process, Send us a note as soon as possible telling us that you'd like to organize a local Team Sarcoma event and we'll help you with the details.

Tell us about your event

The members of a local Team Sarcoma event tell us what they did and where they did it. They send us pictures of the members of their team and we will post them on the Team Sarcoma website. Take a look at some of our local Team Sarcoma webpages for earlier Team Sarcoma Bike Tours to read the stories of the wonderful and creative things that people all over the world did as members of a Local Team Sarcoma for this initiative.

If you can't organize or participate in a local Team Sarcoma event, but want to help out, you can sponsor one or more participants in a Team Sarcoma event or just make a donation to help sponsor sarcoma research. To get a copy of our donation form, click here.
